Name the Landscape of Slate is not random name, it can be extended over the whole area of Nízký Jeseník and Oderské Hills. Local conditions were influenced by rock called slate since ancient times.

Slate material started to be used in the area of Nízký Jeseník and Oderské hills already in the Middle Ages. It has been used as a building material for walling, tiling and paving. In the first half of the 18th century, its mining recruited into new dimension. People started to produce roofing material from slate and small sporadic mining has gradually developed into industry - mining and production of roofing slate. Earliest mention of such activities is dated back to 1775. At that time slate had been mined in several quarries near the village Heřmanice. In the coming century mining had moved into underground mining quarries. In underground were mined quality raw material and also was ensured coursework of local miners during hard winter conditions. In the period of maximum prosperity of slate industry mined around 50 factories in this area. The trail informs about the development of slate mining and processing from the earliest times to the present. Informs through confrontation of mine works on their surface and in close surroundings. Manifestations of human activities is imprinted in the countryside in the form of slate heaps, old galleries, quarries, mines and buildings used for mining. Nature gradually takes it all back, thus creates unique sceneries formed by combinated behavior of man and nature.
